Smart Grids

With state-of-the-art communication technology such as broadband powerline and the sensors in the grid, stakeholders of our energy systems, producers and consumers, are increasingly networked and must coordinate. With our secure and innovative BPL products, the power grid becomes a smart grid, able to withstand the demands such as renewable generation and e-mobility, and risks such as cybercrime and non-technical losses.

Digital control meets relays: Weidmüller and PPC launch new solution for control rollout with EEBUS relay converter

At E-world, Weidmüller and PPC are demonstrating the EEBUS Relay Converter (ERC), a solution for control in accordance with Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG) and Section 9 of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) at the interface between EEBUS digital and relay analogue. The jointly developed product translates digital EEBUS control signals into analogue relay switching commands. This means that even non-digital systems can be controlled by an SMGWplus in accordance with the requirements of Section 14a EnWG and Section 9 EEG.

Direct control from the gateway – The key to efficient control rollout in 2026

With the ramp-up in the installation of heat pumps and wall boxes, grid operators are facing a new challenge: each of these systems must be controllable in the future. The difficulty here? If a new physical device has to be installed for each controllable consumer, the mass rollout will be slowed down by the amount of material and time required. This is exactly where the SMGWplus control concept steps in.

Recap of 2025

2025 – a year of partnerships and innovations! The rollout of smart metering systems is in full swing, and the control rollout, driven by Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG) and Section 9 of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), is gaining significant momentum. In this context, the interoperability of our solutions with those of our partners in the market is a prerequisite. 2025 is therefore all about partnership and cooperation: around 35 partners have joined our ‘PPC connect: Interoperability in practice’ initiative this year.

SMGW 2.0 reinforces our 2023 product portfolio

2022 was a particularly active and exciting year for the smart metering industry. PPC will meet the numerous challenges and developments in the coming year with the second generation of its Smart Meter Gateway, to further strengthen our portfolio of technology and applications. Why SMGW 2.0? "Newer, higher, further" could of course be the watchwords, as in many product development cycles, but for the development of our second generation Smart Meter Gateways, other factors are the key drivers.
