With the 20-20-20 energy targets and environmental objectives, the European Union has set itself ambitious but also achievable goals. In addition to the 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and the 20% increase in energy efficiency, the EU must also increase the proportion of energy that is produced from renewables by 20%. With the increase of intermittent, renewable energy sources in the grid, it is difficult to guarantee high security of supply: supply is weather dependant and can no longer adapt to the consumer’s needs, instead the consumer must now adjust to the supply. In order to enable this to happen it is vital to have a precise overview over both areas. This is where Smart Metering comes into play.

Smart Metering for the integration of renewable energy
Smart Metering can be described as an essential part of the Smart Grid, which can also work independently. One of the main functions of Smart Metering is advanced meter reading (AMR). The energy consumption data is collected in short intervals (e.g. every minute, every hour or every day) in order to build up an accurate picture of the energy requirements. This paves the way for variable tariffs that change, for example, every hour, depending on availability of energy – for instance if a lot of electricity from wind power is available, the electricity price will fall.
Smart Grids not just Smart Meters – this is PPC’s solution. With our modular Broadband Powerline system various smart metering modules can be cleverly combined in order to create flexible solutions according to your needs. With BPL any commercially available meter can be used for Smart Metering. The meter itself must not store any complex data. The intelligence lies in the BPL System on the grid and the remote meter reading by means of bidirectional data transmission in real-time. The data is encrypted and sent to the utility where it is stored under the strictest security provisions in order to maintain the highest level of data protection. The customer’s data can be retrieved at any time via a customer portal by means of a secure internet connection thus developing a strong consumer confidence.
