BPL Headend (LTE) 6R
With the BPL Headend (LTE) 6R, PPC offers a cost-effective two-in-one solution for connecting broadband powerline networks to LTE and GSM networks. The 6R features a built-in antenna and can be installed directly in transformer stations and cable distribution boxes—whichever location offers the best cellular reception. Thanks to the internal plug-in SIM, you have maximum flexibility in choosing a service provider.
Connectivity as a Service
Our subsidiary, Coms4Grid, offers a SIM card service for the BPL Headend (LTE) 6R. Coms4Grid provides you with devices that have built-in SIM cards and handles the following:
- Initial Configuration
- Mobile connectivity via a custom APN with IPv6
- SIM Card Management
The Challenge: Poor cell phone reception
The creation of a smart grid presents energy utilities and grid operators with a complex and costly challenge. A key task in this process is to identify the appropriate communication technology for data transmission and to develop a strategy that enables the cost-effective integration of sensors and actuators. Due to poor reception in basements or shielded installation locations, cellular networks reach their physical limits in some installation scenarios.
The solution: Hybrid BPL-LTE connection
To develop cost-effective rollout strategies, hybrid solutions are a good option, in which, for example, broadband powerline (BPL) technology efficiently complements cellular networks. Devices that are difficult to reach are connected via BPL from the basement to an LTE router. The LTE connection is ultimately established where good reception is available—for example, on the street at a street distribution box, at a transformer station, or even on upper floors of buildings. The BPL Headend (LTE) 6R, developed specifically for this purpose, is designed to bridge the gap between the BPL and LTE networks at these installation sites.
Partnership with Sierra Wireless
By combining a Sierra Wireless LTE module with PPC’s BPL technology in a single device, we have developed a high-performance hybrid solution that optimally integrates both technologies. This enables reliable data transmission even in hard-to-reach installation locations.
