5G RedCap for Smart Meter Rollout: E.ON Grid Solutions, Westnetz, Telefónica Deutschland, and PPC Test New Mobile Communication Technology

Telefónica Deutschland, E.ON Grid Solutions, Westnetz, and Power Plus Communications AG (PPC) have successfully tested 5G RedCap as a new mobile communication technology for smart meter gateways. To do this, a 5G RedCap-enabled smart meter gateway from PPC was connected to the meter operator’s backend systems via Telefónica Deutschland’s 700-MHz network. This allowed the partners to simulate the entire communication chain under conditions close to real-world scenarios—from the smart meter gateway through the cellular network to the meter operator’s systems.

One Gateway, 20 Meters: How 1:n enables scalable smart meter rollout

The need to connect multiple meters to a smart meter gateway has long been a topic of discussion in the industry. Technically speaking, 1-to-n connectivity is no longer a distant prospect; even connecting several dozen meters is easily achievable. What matters most are the design and installation, which must function reliably in the field over the long term.

CACTUS project completed: Greater transparency for the low-voltage grid

At E-world, Weidmüller and PPC are demonstrating the EEBUS Relay Converter (ERC), a solution for control in accordance with Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG) and Section 9 of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) at the interface between EEBUS digital and relay analogue. The jointly developed product translates digital EEBUS control signals into analogue relay switching commands. This means that even non-digital systems can be controlled by an SMGWplus in accordance with the requirements of Section 14a EnWG and Section 9 EEG.
